Manchester United fans thought the signings of Bastien Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin would spell the end of Marouane Fellaini’s awful time at Old Trafford when they arrived over the summer just gone.
However, this has not proved to be the case, with Louis van Gaal having an apparent love for the Belgian. Since his arrival, Fellaini has hardly been a fans’ favourite, he’s instead been a flashback to the poor David Moyes reign. Considering the team’s win rate is extremely low when he starts, he doesn’t seem to be suited to the demands of playing for the club.
Rather than letting his feet do the talking, recently he lets his elbows do it, and at Man United he isn’t used as effectively las he was at Everton. His £27.5m price tag is a hard one to live up to, and with only one goal in 15 games this season, he’s been very disappointing. With fans calling for his head, which players could replace him?
Yaya Toure
One deal that would surprise everyone, but one that could happen, is a swoop for Manchester City’s Yaya Toure. Few players have dared to cross the border, but more recently it has very much been traffic going the other way, with Owen Hargreaves and Carlos Tevez heading to the blue side. But, considering the Ivorian wants to stay in the Premier League, this move could benefit both United and himself. With six goals and five assists in 26 games, his experience and quality is desperately craved at Old Trafford.
Toni Kroos
Many fans will be hoping for a younger player whom can be part of the club’s future for years to come. One such option could be Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos, who may be sold by the Spanish team. With one goal and nine assists in 35 games, he is a player that would fit in well to the United system. After all this is a playmaker that the Red Devils have wanted to sign before and with Schweinsteiger now at Old Trafford, fans will be hoping he utilises his links.
Paul Pogba
The one that got away. Paul Pogba used to be a Man United player, but was stupidly let go, whereas flops such as Anderson and Darron Gibson were given chances. With six goals and eight assists in 37 games this season, he is another of Europe’s most sought after midfielders. His flexibility to play anywhere along the midfield is magical, his play is exciting and he is everything Manchester United have missed since Paul Scholes retired. Given he has already stated that a move to Manchester City could be off the cards due to his old allegiance, could a move back be on if Jose Mourinho takes over? Perhaps.
Leon Goretzka
Another player for the future is Schalke’s Leon Goretzka. At the age of 21, he is still growing as a footballer, but, like Fellaini, he is flexible in terms of his playing position. With one goal and two assists in 21 games, he is still finding his feet, and could build on his potential to become an exciting player.
Youri Tielemans
Much is said about the potential of fellow Belgian Youri Tielemans, currently at Anderlecht. At the age of 18 he is one of the most coveted youngsters in the world, and could easily walk into many top teams’ starting XIs. With five goals and three assists in 35 games this season, he could be an exciting purchase and be a mainstay in the team for years, something fans crave.
