This week we will be treated to another instalment of the Capital One Cup, with the Premier League’s big six entering the third round stage. The tie of the round is arguably Manchester United and Newcastle United – a game that has seen some titanic battles over the years.

This latest list highlights the top 10 battles of yesteryear and hopefully we will be witnessing yet another fantastic battle tonight.

23/02/2008 Premier League – Newcastle 1-5 Manchester United

Manchester United enforced their dominance over the Premier League during this period with an emphatic thumping of Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Two goals each from deadly duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney followed by the icing on the cake from substitute Louis Saha in the final minute sent out a message to their title rivals.

As for Newcastle, they were struggling in and around the relegation zone and Kevin Keegan’s side offered little or nothing to this game, despite a conciliation header from Abdoulaye Faye, they were never able to handle the attacking threat of United.

In a fixture of a long history this is definitely one that the hosts will want to forget and one that United probably wish they could go back to seeing as how times have changed in the North East.

15/09/2001 Premier League – Newcastle 4-3 Manchester United

Sir Bobby Robson’s 100th game in charge of The Toon was arguable one of the best against nemesis United that was dominated by Geordie hero Alan Shearer.

Shearer scored an 83rd minute winner to send the Newcastle supporters wild and also helped Roy Keane get sent off for the Champions.

Newcastle led 3-1 with half an hour to go thanks to Laurent Robert, Nikos Dabizas and Rob Lee goals sandwiching a Ruud van Nistlerooy strike, but a typical Red Devils comeback was on thanks to two goals in two minutes from Ryan Giggs and Juan Sebastian Veron.

But just as the momentum looked to be with the visitors, Shearer did what he does best and won the thrilling game for the Magpies.

23/11/2002 Premier League – Manchester United 5-3 Newcastle

Ruud van Nistlerooy stole the show at Old Trafford with a sublime hat-trick that was enough to see off a plucky Newcastle side which doesn’t have the best record when visiting the red half of Manchester.

Paul Scholes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also netted for Red Devils in a game that sent a message to United’s rivals who were seemingly dismissing them from the title race before Christmas.

The visitors tried to get back into the game on more than one occasion but goals from Olivier Bernard, Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy were not enough to worry the hosts in another high scoring contest between the two clubs, something that was becoming a regular occurrence through the years.

20/10/1996 Premier League – Newcastle United 5-0 Manchester United

Not only one of the best games between these two great clubs but a game that was also voted one of the best in the Premier League era, Newcastle United thrashed the champions Manchester United at St James Park live on Sky Sports in a game that also featured one of the best goals of the past 20 years.

It is a rare occasion that the Red Devils are outclassed but this was certainly one of those moments and goals from Darren Peacock, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer were eclipsed by ‘that chip’ from Phillipe Albert that will go down as one of the best moments in Premier League history.

12/04/2003 Premier League – Newcastle United 2-6 Manchester United

St James’ Park has become a happy hunting ground for Manchester United over the years and a thrashing here over the Geordies kept United top of the Premier League with Arsenal chasing them down.

A superb hat-trick from midfield maestro Paul Scholes and further goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ryan Giggs and Ruud van Nistlerooy enforced Sir Alex Ferguson’s side’s dominance over the Toon who took the lead early on through youngster Jermaine Jenas.

A late Shola Ameobi penalty kept Arsenal’s goal difference above United’s in what became a thrilling end of the season battle between the two clubs.

04/01/2012 Premier League – Newcastle United 3-0 Manchester United

Last season was definitely one of the best Premier League campaigns to date and it saw Newcastle battle at the right end of the Premier League and qualify for Europe, as Manchester United missed out on the title on the final day of the season.

A dominant performance from Alan Pardew’s side showed just how far they have come over the past few years and goals from Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye in their first seasons in the North East were followed by a comical own goal from Phil Jones to wrap up a title denting defeat for United.

The 3-0 scoreline didn’t represent an even game. Although the visitors had chances to get something from the match Newcastle stood firm and overall deserved a crucial three points.

17/04/2005 FA Cup semi-final – Newcastle 1-4 Manchester United

Newcastle United are a club starved of trophies over the past 20 years and reaching the FA Cup semi-final at the Millennium Stadium was surely a massive opportunity to put that right. But they ran into an impressive Manchester United side.

The Red Devils found themselves 3-0 up after an hour thanks to two goals from Ruud van Nistlerooy and a Paul Scholes header that put the game beyond the underdogs who realised this wasn’t to be their year once again.

Home grown Shola Ameobi pulled one back for the Geordies before Cristiano Ronaldo put the icing on the cake for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side who went on to lose the final against Arsenal on a penalty shoot-out.

11/08/1996 – Charity Shield – Manchester United 4-0 Newcastle United

Manchester United kicked off the new season the way they had ended the last, lifting silverware. United won the league and cup double, allowing Newcastle United to face them in the Charity Shield as the Toon Army finished second in the Premier League the previous season.

A dominant performance from a side that was dominating English football saw goals from Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Nicky Butt and David Beckham give them a simple victory at Wembley stadium and continued Newcastle’s long wait for a trophy.

The North East club did however give a debut to £15million new signing that day – Alan Shearer, and we all know what happened there…

12/01/2008 Premier League – Manchester United 6-0 Newcastle United

A stunning second half display from Manchester United saw them trounce Newcastle at Old Trafford despite going in all square at the break.

A second half hat trick from Cristiano Ronaldo along with a brace from Carlos Tevez and a header from Rio Ferdinand stunned the visitors who were being managed by caretaker boss Nigel Pearson.

The Magpies had recently sacked Sam Allardyce then rejected by Harry Redknapp and they looked like a club in turmoil during the second half massacre that also saw their midfielder and former United player Alan Smith sent off. The supporters held banners during the game demanding club legend Alan Shearer be given the role as manager, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

01/01/2007 Premier League – Newcastle United 2-2 Manchester United

In memorable games between these two massive Premier League clubs, there has often been one side who have come out dominant in a thrashing either way, but this New Years Day clash at St James’ Park was just as tight as the scoreline suggests.

James Milner gave the Geordies a surprise lead only for Paul Scholes to cancel that out just before half time in a pulsating first half and it took Scholes a matter of seconds to put United in front after the interval with a sublime effort from distance.

Home grown youngster David Edgar gave Newcastle a share of the points thanks to a small deflection from Scholes to send both sets of supporters home satisfied.
